Chandler, Arizona, is in Maricopa County on the southeast suburban side of Phoenix. Other nearby suburbs include Mesa and Tempe to the north, Glibert to the east and the Gila River Indian Community to the south.

Founded in 1912, Chandler was incorporated in 1920. It began as a decidedly diverse, progressive community, a tradition it has continued to reinforce throughout its storied history.

According to the 2010 United States census, Chandler was home to 236,123 people. It also provides a satellite home to branches of a number of large technology companies, including Intel and Orbital Sciences Corporation.

Shopping and Dining

In addition to all of the shopping and dining options available to Chandler’s residents in the nearby metropolis of Phoenix, there are a variety of opportunities in town. Chandler has a lovely and charming downtown that is a magnificent celebration of the community’s history. Shop among the stucco-and-red-clay-roofed buildings and palm tree-lined streets in and around Historic Downtown Chandler.

Check out the locally owned and operated retailers, gift shops and unique boutiques, offering a bit of something for everyone. Market Square offers antique shopping in a beautiful garden locale with a homemade fudge store and a whole lot more.

For those who are looking for one-stop shopping, Chandler Fashion Center, colloquially referred to as Chandler Fashion Mall or Chandler Mall, offers Macy's, Dillard's, Nordstrom and Sears as its anchor stores. Here you will also find approximately 180 retailers, including Apple, Abercrombie, Coach, Eddie Bauer, Gap, Frederick's of Hollywood and J.Crew.

The mall can also serve your dining desires with the Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang's, Kona Grill, Big City Grill and others all under one roof.

Parks and Recreation

The city of Chandler contains more than 50 parks, including huge regional parks, neighborhood parks, community parks and special use facilities. Individuals, families and visitors of all ages, skill levels and interests are sure to find thrilling, interesting and exciting recreational opportunities in Chandler.

There are aquatic facilities, dog parks, an environmental education center, a hummingbird habitat, a skateboard park and a number of other recreational centers within this civic-minded suburb. 

Tumbleweed Park is an excellent representative of the parks and recreation opportunities available to residents and visitors of Chandler. In addition to a comprehensive recreation center, offering group exercise classes, park pavilion rentals, on-site child care and much more, Tumbleweed Park is home to Playtopia.

Playtopia’s 2.5 acres are divided into Farm Land, City Land and Critter Land. These play zone themes describe the various and eclectic features that make up Chandler’s unique heritage.

Some of Playtopia’s facilities are horseshoe pits, swing sets, barbeque grills, sand volleyball courts, and fourteen covered picnic pavilions, ranging in size and seating capacity from 15-25 all the way up to 320.

There are a number of special events and activities throughout the year in Chandler, but perhaps the one it’s most noted for is the annual Ostrich Festival. The incredibly popular event is a celebration of the city’s heritage, dating back to the early 1900s, of raising ostriches on ranches in order to sell their magnificent and stylish plumes.

The City of Chandler boasts a vibrant and strong employment opportunity base in high tech industries like computer chip manufacturing, banking, communications and space satellite manufacturing. Major employers in the area include Intel, Verizon Wireless, Bank of America, Chandler Regional Hospital and Orbital Sciences.
 

Schools, Health, Transportation

The Chandler Unified School District serves the public education needs of majority of the community. There are an incredible amount of education alternatives in the area as well, including religion-based schools, magnet schools, traditional academies and charter schools.

Chandler Regional Hospital serves the area’s acute care needs; however, there are a number of other nearby options as well, including the Banner Desert Medical Center and the Mercy Gilbert Medical Center.

Chandler Municipal Airport is mainly a regional connecting airport and the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is only 20 miles away. Residents and visitors also have bus service, rail service, and several highways and byways by which to transport themselves around town.
