Mesa Real Estate and Community Info.

Mesa is a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona, situated approximately 20 miles east of the city in the section commonly called the East Valley.

Even though Mesa is technically a suburban community, it is home to more than 439,000 people, according to the 2010 U.S. census. It’s not only the third-largest city in Arizona – behind only Phoenix and Tucson – but also ranks as the largest suburb in the nation, with more residents than notable cities like Minneapolis, Miami, St. Louis and Cleveland.

Located in the Valley of the Sun, Mesa enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine per year. The city’s Chamber of Commerce says that the factors behind Mesa’s incredible growth include a reasonable tax structure, a low crime rate, superior schools and affordable housing.

Shopping and Dining

One-stop shopping in Mesa is available at a number of retail centers, such as the Fiesta Mall, Mesa Riverview and the Superstition Springs Center.

The Fiesta Mall contains Macy's, Best Buy, Sears, Dillard's and Dick's Sporting Goods. There are also a number of other retail outlets nearby, as well as banks and restaurants.

Mesa Riverview is 1,300,000 square feet of shopping focused on outdoor recreation in the northwestern part of the city. Its anchor stores are Walmart, Home Depot and Bass Pro Shops. Restaurants and specialty stores, like Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill, are also inside Mesa Riverview.

Superstition Springs Center in East Mesa features an outdoor amphitheatre and fountain which convert to a stage. Its anchor stores include Dillard's, JCPenney and "Home Sleep Home" furniture store.

Parks and Recreation

Being located in the Valley of the Sun makes Mesa one of the premier golfing destinations in the United States. The city provides residents and visitors alike two municipal golf courses: the 18-hole, magnificently manicured Dobson Ranch Golf Course, and the challenging 9-hole Riverview Golf Course.

There are more than 50 neighborhood parks in Mesa, along with a vast selection of recreation centers, sports complexes, tennis courts and skate parks. Some of the activities offered by these recreation centers include after-school programs for kids, open gym, rock-climbing walls and exercise classes.

Mesa’s desert heat can be beat, at least for a while, at one of its nine public aquatic facilities and swimming pools.

The City of Mesa’s Parks and Recreation Department offers programs, services and trained staff members specifically to serve individuals with disabilities, including easy access to parks and district programs.

Living

Life in Mesa means a lot of things. Located in the Sonoran Desert, with an average high temperature of 86.5 degrees and only about 9 inches of precipitation per year, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that it’s going to be hot and dry.

What you may not know, however, is that Mesa is a cultural oasis. One example of the community’s commitment to culture and the arts is the Mesa Arts Center, the biggest arts complex in all of Arizona. Residents and visitors to the area can experience national and local theatre performances, art exhibits and classes, concerts and a lot more.

Because of its immense size, more than 130 square miles, Mesa is broken into east and west designations. Many of the city’s locations are referred to by locals as being in East or West Mesa.

The city’s largest employers include Mesa Public Schools, Boeing, Banner Health, and Mesa Community College.

Schools, Health, Transportation

Mesa Public Schools serve almost all of the city’s public educational needs, with small sections falling under the Gilbert Public Schools’ and Tempe Union High School District’s jurisdictions.

Health care facilities in and near Mesa include Mountain Vista Medical Center, Arizona Regional Medical Center and Banner Desert Medical Center.

Commuters in their own vehicles have a number of freeways from which to choose. Public transportation is offered by Valley Metro buses and the METRO Light Rail system. The Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport provides limited air transportation service to complement Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix.
